Trey Taylor’s life demonstrates grace, strength and connection

Trey Taylor has lived a life filled with career triumphs, heartfelt relationships, profound mentorship, and a battle with cancer that has transformed him in unexpected ways.

From his early days as a driven young professional to his later years filled with introspection and spiritual growth, Trey’s journey has been shaped by resilience and faith. His story unfolds across continents, careers and relationships, revealing a man whose life was marked by love, grace and an unwavering commitment to lifting others up.

Whether mentoring young engineers, reconciling with estranged family, or sharing his hard-earned wisdom, Trey has left a lasting impact on everyone he’s met. As he faces his final chapter, Trey’s story is a testament to faith, resilience, and the connections that define our humanity.

Divided into four major themes — career, mentorship, relationships and his cancer journey — Trey’s story explores the life of a man who has left an indelible mark on everyone he’s encountered.

Career innovations

Trey’s professional journey has been anything but conventional. Starting in his twenties, he navigated the emerging field of digital technology, working on early internet projects with creativity and adaptability.

One of his first major successes involved working on a groundbreaking corporate website development project, where he demonstrated his knack for balancing technical and strategic needs.

“I remember the company trusted me with this project despite my lack of experience,” Trey said. “I put everything into it, and the results exceeded everyone’s expectations.”

Later, his career took him across industries, from pioneering efforts in nanotechnology to leading innovation in defense systems.

Trey’s ability to adapt and apply his expertise in diverse settings set him apart, as did his unwavering commitment to creating solutions that prioritized safety and efficiency. His journey was marked by serendipitous opportunities, tireless work ethic, and a deep sense of purpose that defined his professional legacy.

His tenure at Fairbanks Morse Defense, a company that provides safety and maintenance solutions for the Navy and Coast Guard, was one of his proudest achievements. In this role, Trey spearheaded the development of robotics and artificial intelligence systems that enhanced the safety of sailors and reduced the risks of repetitive stress injuries.

“Everything we do is focused on safety and maintenance on board the ships,” Trey shared. “To be honest, it was my all-time favorite job.”

Trey’s influence extended beyond technical innovation. He served as a bridge between engineers and decision-makers, ensuring that every project aligned with the company’s mission.

The opportunity at Fairbanks Morse came serendipitously. After closing a startup in Houston due to economic downturns, Trey’s expertise caught the attention of a former colleague. This chance encounter led to a new chapter in his career.

“I pitched an idea to the Navy without even being on the payroll, yet,” Trey recalled. “Two months later, I was building a team and a lab to bring those ideas to life.”

The innovative training applications Trey helped develop were well-received by the Navy, leading to numerous opportunities for collaboration. Trey’s work also connected him with institutions like Columbia University, Virginia Tech, and the Office of Naval Research.

“Those collaborations broadened my perspective,” Trey explained. “I learned as much from them as they did from me.”

These partnerships exemplified his approach to innovation — one rooted in shared learning and collective progress.

Guiding the next generation

For Trey, mentorship has been a cornerstone of his career and personal life. One former mentee, who began as a fresh graduate with limited experience, shared, “Trey saw potential in me that I didn’t even see in myself. Through his guidance, I not only gained technical skills but also confidence and clarity in my career goals.”

Another mentee, now a leader in the industry, described Trey’s mentorship as transformative.

“Trey taught me not just about engineering but about integrity, perseverance and the value of lifelong learning,” the colleague said.

Trey’s dedication to nurturing talent reflects his belief in paying forward the lessons he learned from his own mentors.

“What I’m most proud of is the mentorship I’ve given to young people,” he said. “Everyone has different starting points. The key is to meet them where they are and guide them toward where they can go.”

Whether coaching fresh graduates or interns, Trey’s approach was grounded in fostering both technical skills and personal growth. His ability to tailor his mentorship to the unique needs of each individual was one of his greatest strengths.

One mentee’s transformation exemplified Trey’s impact.

“He came to me as a mechanical engineer,” Trey shared. “Now, he’s also an electrical engineer, software developer, and the leader of my AI team.”

This mentee’s heartfelt letter of gratitude, including thanks for helping his family during a personal loss, remains one of Trey’s most treasured memories.

Trey’s ability to nurture talent stemmed from his own experiences with exceptional mentors, like Rick Lewis and Jim Otto.

“Rick taught me everything from business etiquette to financial planning,” Trey noted. “Jim’s guidance on fiduciary responsibilities has served me well throughout my career.”

Trey’s mentoring extended beyond professional advice.

“I always tried to instill values of humility and curiosity,” Trey said. “Life is about learning, and every person you meet has something to teach you.”

This philosophy extended into his personal life, where Trey often found himself offering guidance to friends and family navigating their own challenges.

Relationships: Love, forgiveness and connection

Throughout his life, Trey’s relationships have been a source of strength and joy. These anecdotes reflect the deep connections Trey cultivated, which have been a cornerstone of his life.

Growing up in a single-mother household, he developed a close bond with his mother, Catherine, and sister, Terrell.

“We didn’t have much, but we were happy,” Trey said. “Laughter made everything easier.”

The trio’s unity carried them through financial struggles and emotional hardships, building a foundation of trust and love that has endured throughout Trey’s life.

Reconciliation also played a pivotal role in Trey’s story. After decades of estrangement from part of his family, he was compelled to make amends.

“God made it clear I needed to forgive,” Trey explained. “The healing process culminated in a family reunion that was a beautiful gift of grace.”

Friendship has been another cornerstone of Trey’s life. His relationship with Danielle, his caregiver and closest friend, has been transformative.

“She knows me better than anyone,” Trey shared. “She’s my angel, put in my path by God.”

Danielle’s unwavering support, from managing his care to sharing moments of laughter, has been a beacon of light during Trey’s darkest days.

These relationships have also taught Trey valuable lessons about trust and vulnerability.

“Letting go of pride and accepting help was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Trey admitted. “But it’s also been the most liberating.”

He often emphasizes the importance of building authentic connections, saying, “The love and fellowship we share are what truly matter. Everything else is fleeting.”

Faith amid adversity

Trey’s battle with Stage 4 colorectal cancer has been a profound test of his faith and resilience. Each day brings its own challenges, from managing intense physical pain to grappling with the emotional weight of his prognosis. Yet, it is in these moments that Trey’s faith shines brightest.

“God has a plan for me, and I trust in that plan,” he explained.

Trey finds strength in small victories, such as a pain-free afternoon, a heartfelt conversation with a loved one, or a moment of quiet prayer. His days are punctuated with intentional acts of connection and gratitude, whether it’s calling family members, mentoring young professionals over the phone, or simply enjoying the company of others.

Trey describes these moments as evidence of God’s grace. Diagnosed in January 2024, he was given 12 months to live – a timeline that has allowed him to reflect deeply and prepare.

“Even in the hardest times, I feel God’s presence guiding me and giving me peace,” said Trey. “Initially, the diagnosis was overwhelming. I didn’t have a will or an end-of-life plan. But, once I accepted help and let go of my pride, the journey became smoother.”

Faith has been Trey’s anchor through this ordeal.

“He’s lined up everything, from my health stabilizing to reconnecting with family,” he added. “All I asked of God was to let me see Christmas Day and spend it with my family, then I’m ready to go.”

Despite the physical challenges, Trey’s focus remains on love, laughter and fellowship.

“These are the connections that stay with you through eternity,” he reflected.

Trey’s story also includes moments of surrender and grace.

“One day, I was struggling with unbearable pain,” Trey recounted. “I prayed, and suddenly, I felt a wave of peace wash over me. That was God telling me he’s with me every step of the way.”

As he prepares for his final chapter, Trey’s message resonates deeply.

“Surround yourself with love and trust. Listen to God,” he said. “Remember, the connections you build during your life are what truly endure.”
